2022 DR. MORRIS CHANG EXEMPLARY LEADERSHIP AWARD RECIPIENT
Steve Sanghi
Executive Chair, Microchip Technology
Steve Sanghi led Microchip Technology from 1990 till February 2021 and was one of the longest serving CEO of a semiconductor company. Mr. Sanghi led the IPO of Microchip (Nasdaq: MCHP) in March 1993 with annual sales of $89M. Under Mr. Sanghi’s leadership, Microchip’s revenue grew to a $5.4 Billion run rate and a market value of approximately $40 Billion. Microchip returned a cumulative stock-price gain of over 263X excluding dividends since the IPO in March 1993. Under Mr. Sanghi’s leadership, Microchip completed its 121st consecutive profitable quarter on December 31, 2020, an achievement unmatched in the semiconductor industry.
Mr. Sanghi recently relinquished his CEO role to his long- time groomed successor within Microchip and became Executive Chair starting March 1, 2021. He also recently joined the board of Impinj, a leading RFID provider and Internet of Things pioneer.
Microchip has also been an industry consolidator, having purchased over 20 companies in the last 12 years. All of them were successfully integrated into Microchip’s business—creating enormous value for the shareholders of Microchip—through business process improvements that brought them to Microchip’s level of financial performance. He is co-author of the book “Driving Excellence: How the Aggregate System Turned Microchip Technology from a Failing Company to a Market Leader (Wiley; April 2006).”

In June 1995, Mr. Sanghi received an Arizona Entrepreneur of the Year award. Mr. Sanghi is the only CEO to win Executive of the Year award twice by Electronic Engineering Times. And Microchip is the only company to win Company of the Year award twice by the Arizona Business Leadership Association (ABL). Additionally, Mr. Sanghi has been named to the Phoenix Business Journal’s annual list of the Most Admired CEOs, and the Arizona Technology Council selected Mr. Sanghi as the winner of their 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award. Finally, the Wall Street Journal ranked Mr. Sanghi second among the top 28 long-serving CEOs of the S&P 500.
Mr. Sanghi has served on numerous public and private boards. He was a member of the board of directors of Mellanox Inc (Nasdaq: MLNX), a high- performance Ethernet Interconnect company headquartered in Israel. Mellanox was recently acquired by Nvidia. Mr. Sanghi’s past board of directors service includes Hittite Microwave (Nasdaq: HITT) sold to ADI in 2014, Xyratex, Ltd. (Nasdaq: XRTX) from 2004 to 2014 (sold to Seagate in March 2014), Chairman of the Board of FlipChip International (sold to TSHT of China in 2015), Adflex Solutions (Nasdaq: AFLX) from 1994 to 1999 (sold to Innovex Inc), Artisoft Inc (Nasdaq: ASFT) for two years in the 90s, Vivid Semiconductor (private company funded by Kleiner Perkins, sold to National Semiconductor) and a member of the board of trustees of Kettering University in Flint, Michigan from 2004 to 2012. Mr. Sanghi was also a member of the board of FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics, a non-profit company formed to inspire young students in the vital areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math from April 2007 to April 2016 when he termed out after nine years.
