Cambridge, UK, 09/26/2023 – Disposable coffee cups are made from paper, with a plastic lining to make them waterproof – both of which are technically recyclable. But the reality is that most recycling facilities aren’t equipped to remove the plastic lining, the paper tends to be contaminated by its contents, and there’s little to no market for the recyclate, so the majority of cups are simply thrown into landfill. In fact, just 0.25% of them are actually recycled.
